Ake confident Man City can overhaul Arsenal in title race

Nathan Ake is confident Manchester City will hold their nerve to overhaul Arsenal in the tension-filled Premier League title race.  City closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to one point with a 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland on Sunday. Also Read: ‘Jude’s extraordinary’ Although some believe having to come from behind in a title race is more mentally demanding, City defender Ake believes the advantage is with his team. “For me it doesn’t matter really,” Ake said. “It’s in our hands so we’re not depending on what they do. That’s the difference from last year, we were still depending on what they were doing.  “This season it’s in our hands. The only thing we have to do is focus on the next one. At the moment, it’s going well but we know what we have to do in the end—win four games and we can be champions again,” Ake said. ‘Jude’s extraordinary’

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel said Monday his side were ready for the threat posed by “extraordinary” Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham in their home Champions League semi-final, first leg. Tuesday’s clash between 14-time winners Real and Bayern, with six Champions League titles, is the most played semi-final in the competition’s history. England midfielder Bellingham, still just 20, joined Real Madrid before the start of the season from Borussia Dortmund.  Bellingham has since become one of Real’s most important players and is already considered among the world’s best. He is their top goal scorer in the league this season with 17 goals, despite playing mostly as midfielder.  Also Read: PSG win record-extending 12th French league title Thomas Tuchel Tuchel said Bellingham was “a key player in a very offensive position” for the Spanish giants. “Jude is extraordinary. He was fantastic here in the Bundesliga, how he progressed shows the level of personality he has, it’s only possible with a huge personality.  “Everyone who plays for Madrid plays with the pressure of the shirt. He plays with the pressure to play with this club and all the expectations. “He handles it like he’s never done anything else,” said Tuchel. “But we are well aware of it and will try and find solutions tomorrow [Tuesday],” he added. Tuchel said Bayern would host not only the Spanish champions elect, but “an aura, a legend that surrounds them.”  The coach, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 having taken Paris Saint-Germain to the final the previous season, said Real were not the only team with experience in the competition. “Not only me but the team has experience. Right now we have a good mix between anticipation and tension,” he said.  Eight members of Bayern’s current squad were on the opposite side to Tuchel’s PSG when Bayern won the 2020 Champions League final. Captain Manuel Neuer and veteran forward Thomas Mueller also won the title at Wembley in 2013. “You need luck, momentum, freedom, the whole package to overcome Real Madrid in the semi-finals,” Tuchel added.  “If it only came down to experience, then I wouldn’t have a chance,” Tuchel said in reference to opposite number Carlo Ancelotti, who has won a record four Champions League titles as a coach. Mumbai City FC humble Goa to storm into final

Mumbai City FC qualified for the Indian Super League (ISL) final by securing a comfortable 2-0 victory against FC Goa in the second leg of their semi-final fixture at the Mumbai Football Arena on Monday. The Islanders defeated the Gaurs 5-2 on aggregate across both legs and will now lock horns with Mohun Bagan Super Giant as both teams battle it out to become the ISL Cup Winners at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on May 4. Argentine striker Jorge Pereyra Diaz, returning from suspension, broke the deadlock in the 69th minute by tapping home a rebound that came off a Rahul Bheke header. Also Read: More than luck… pluck! Lallianzuala Chhangte capped off proceedings with an 83rd minute strike, where he pounced upon a disoriented FC Goa defence to receive and convert a through ball by Vikram Partap Singh deep inside the box of the Gaurs. Chhangte thus brought up his 10th strike of the ISL season, equalling his record from the previous campaign when he was crowned with the Golden Ball award. For FC Goa, their campaign came to a disappointing end, as injuries to key stars like Victor Rodriguez and Sandesh Jhingan hampered their progress in the second half of the season despite topping the league table until December.

Thiago Silva to bid tearful adieu to Chelsea at end of season

Brazilian defender Thiago Silva will leave Chelsea at the end of the season after a "dream" four-year spell at Stamford Bridge. Silva announced his farewell on Monday in an emotional video message on Chelsea's website. The 39-year-old centre-back arrived at the Premier League club on a free transfer in August 2020 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. He has made 151 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, winning the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. "Chelsea means a lot to me. I came here with the intention of only staying for a year and it ended up being four years. Not just for me but for my family, too," Silva said during a tearful goodbye speech. "My sons play for Chelsea so it's a source of great pride to be a part of the Chelsea family. I hope they can continue their careers here at this victorious club that many players wish to be part of. "I think in everything I did here over the four years, I always gave my all. But unfortunately, everything has a start, a middle and an end." Also Read: Gunners 'Spurred' on Silva was a popular figure among Chelsea fans after making an immediate impact in their 2020-21 Champions League-winning campaign, which climaxed with victory over Manchester City in the final in Porto. The fond feelings are clearly mutual as Silva saluted the fanbase and revealed his intention to return to Chelsea in a different capacity in the future. "It's an indescribable love. I can only say thank you," he said. "Definitely a dream. Not even in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I could achieve such great things and win one of the best professional titles, the Champions League, at one of the biggest clubs in the world. "Goodbyes are for those that leave and don't come back. I intend on coming back one day. I hope to leave the door open so that in the near future I can return, albeit in another role here." Capped 113 times by Brazil, Silva has made 34 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea this season. But the former AC Milan star suffered a groin problem in Chelsea's 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday, raising the possibility that he has made his last appearance in the blue shirt. Mauricio Pochettino's side have five games left this season as they look to salvage a disappointing season by securing European qualification. Chelsea, languishing in ninth place in the Premier League, lost in the FA Cup semi-finals to Manchester City recently and were beaten by Liverpool in the League Cup final in February. Gunners 'Spurred' on

Bukayo Saka said Arsenal had learned lessons from last season’s Premier League collapse as they held off a stirring Tottenham fightback to beat their bitter London rivals 3-2 on Sunday.  The league leaders were in cruise control at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at half-time after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s own goal was followed by goals for Saka and Kai Havertz.  But Spurs produced a stirring second-half response, given a helping hand by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who chipped straight to Cristian Romero in the 64th minute. Son Heung-min made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 87th minute but Arsenal held on despite a nervy final few moments.  ‘Last 20 minutes wasn’t nice’ “The last 20 minutes wasn’t nice, but it was worth it,” England forward Saka told Sky Sports.  “We know it is a big derby and they don’t want to lose 0-3 at home. Momentum shifted their way, but I am proud of the boys—we managed to get the three points. We needed to be calm and everything was frantic. We showed our level heads at the end and I am proud of everyone, it was a nice moment —we know what it means to the fans,” he said.  Saka said Arsenal, who led the way for most of last season before faltering badly in the final weeks, had toughened up. “We showed that today,” he said.  “Maybe last season that could have ended in a draw and we showed we have the experience.” The victory lifts Mikel Arteta’s to 80 points with three games to play.  Manchester City, aiming for an unprecedented fourth straight English top-flight title, are four points behind Arsenal but have two games in hand.  Bournemouth beat Brighton In Sunday’s other early kick-off, Bournemouth beat Brighton 3-0 through goals from Marcos Senesi, Enes Unai and Justin Kluivert. Petr Kratky

Boss Kratky hails Chhangte as Mumbai City host Goa today

Mumbai City FC head coach Petr Kratky has encouraged his team to optimise their home advantage in Monday’s decisive Indian Super League semi-final second leg against FC Goa at the Mumbai Football Arena. The Islanders produced a late comeback to win the opening leg of their last-four clash against the Gaurs 3-2 at the Fatorda Stadium last week. Trailing by 0-2 until the 90th minute, a brace by Lallianzuala Chhangte and a solitary strike by Vikram Partap Singh in added time saw the ISL 2022-23 champions win bragging rights against Manolo Marquez’s men with a one goal advantage. Also Read: A tale of two loyalties However, despite Mumbai City and needing only a draw, Kratky wants his s boys to avoid basking in their glory from Goa and look to win and make it to the summit clash. “We know it’ll be a difficult game against a quality opposition. For me, the game starts 0-0 again. Whatever happened in the previous leg doesn’t matter. Whoever wins this one goes through to the final, and we have to go for a win. We have to use our power and score goals,” Kratky said in the pre-match press conference on Sunday. Kratky praised incumbent ISL Golden Ball-winner Chhangte, who inspired their breath-taking turnaround with two timely strikes. Chhangte took time to find his footing earlier in the campaign, but picked up form recently to sizzle for the Islanders. He has nine goals from 23 appearances. “Chhangte is one of the best players in India, doing what he needs to do, which is working hard, and scoring goals. He has managed to bounce back from the start of the season and has been scoring goals and contributing to the cause of the team. He deserves all the recognition he’s getting at the moment,” Kratky said.
